David Rowland began his studies under Moholy-Nagy in
1940 after the German Bauhaus teacher went to the United
States to found the Institute of Design in Chicago. He
obtained a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Principia
College in Illinois and a Master of Fine Arts in
Industrial Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art in
Michigan. He was employed by Norman Bel Geddes, the
first American Industrial Designer, and began
experimenting with new chair designs. His desire was to
design something that could be produced in quantity, so
that the masses could benefit.
Working with chair concepts interested him the most, as
he perceived a chair to be at once a piece of
architecture, of art, and of sculpture. Plus, it could
be made in great quantities. His endeavour was not
simply to produce a new shape that might strike
someone's fancy for the moment, but to go deeper than
the surface effect. His study had to include a certain
redefinition of a chair and what it must do for people.
It was not to be merely different, but clearly better. A
"clearly better" is precisely what was achieved. After
years of development, Rowland presented the final
version, a stacking chair capable of attaining a density
heretofore never accomplished. Forty chairs in the
original metal could stack within only 4 feet (120 cm)
of height. A chair with not only a fine minimalist,
sculptural form, but whose elegant frame belied its
structural strength.
The new chair was received warmly by the design
community world-wide. When it was awarded the coveted
Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1964, it won for
David Rowland the honour of being one of only two
Americans ever to receive this award. The other was
Buckminster Fuller for his Geodesic Domes. The American
Institute of Designers (AID) awarded the chair Best
Piece of Business Furniture in 1965. The Austrians gave
40/4 their Gold Medal for Furniture in 1969.
Today the 40/4 is on view in museums internationally as
part of their collections of fine design, and the
beautiful and functional 40/4 continues to be celebrated
as it now takes its place among the Modern Classics of
the World. Prestigious installations around the globe
confirm that the 40/4 is a chair that will maintain its
relevance for years to come.
